Herniated Discs

Your spine supports your body as you move throughout the day, and to do this, relies on the discs between the bones of your spine that absorb shock as you move. If you should injure one of these discs, either by a crack, tear or rupture, then the nerves of your spine become compressed. This painful condition is called a herniated disc.

Herniated discs are named for the section of the spine that they affect. For instance, a herniated disc in your neck is called a cervical herniated disc, while in the lower back it is called a lumbar spine disc herniation. How Herniated Discs are Caused

Any motion that causes a direct impact on your spine, such as a fall or sports injury can cause a herniated disc. Herniated discs are more common in old age as the discs become brittle and dry, making them easier to injure.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

You may experience different symptoms depending on the specific disc that is affected.

Cervical Disc Herniation Symptoms

  • Pain in the neck
  • Weakness or numbness as well as pain in the arm or shoulders
  • Tingling sensations in your arm

Lumbar Disc Herniation Symptoms

  • Low back pain
  • Weakness and pain or numbness in the leg or buttocks
  • Tingling sensations in the leg
  • Pain or difficulty when walking or standing
